how does beeswax stack up to paraffin and soy

Paraffin is a petroleum based by-product that is highly flammable. Petroleum is flammable in any form (solid, liquid or gas). It is the least dense of the three, it has a high melting point and wide range (115-158ºF / 46–68ºC) and is consumed quickly. Generalists that prefer paraffin wax like it because the hot throw is perceived quickly; hot wax activates scent molecules quickly. 1 hour per 1” melt pool works perfectly to maintain a safe burn. However, faster burning also burns off scent molecules quickly. This is why scent fades throughout the life of the candle in many cases. It is a non-renewable source which should not be overlooked.

Soy has a lower melting point, and like paraffin, has a large temperature range (120–180ºF / 49-82ºC). It is soft and viscous which means it burns much slower than paraffin — up to 1.5 times longer. Because it is so viscous, consumers perceive that it does not throw as strongly as paraffin, but it just needs more time to warm up the fragrance. As in all science, molecules have more movement with the acceleration of heat. The overall life of the scent lasts longer which can be enjoyed through the life of the candle.

Beeswax has many benefits, and one crucial aspect is its physical hardness and high melt point. These properties contribute to burn times that are at least 2 times longer than paraffin wax. The narrow melting point range also makes the candle much more predictable to maintain consistency throughout the life of the candle.

“Rather, appreciate the luxury of slow living – scents that unfold like the complexity in perfumery or the depth of a fine wine.”

Memory in natural materials

Like clay and other natural materials that follow a path created by friction and water, wax follows this same concept with changing the flow of wax. While the melt pool will not reach the edge of the container in the first 2-3 burns, you may believe the candle has tunneled. Beeswax is a flexible wax and it will catch up in subsequent burns. Tunneling is the result of poor quality, or improper sizing of the wick to the entire candle formula often in mass produced products.

First third

Because beeswax requires more time to warm, the first 2-3, (possibly 4th) burning sessions will look ragged round the edges — a bit jolie laide (beautiful ugly) in the top third of the candle. “Hang up” is the adhesion of wax on the sides of the vessel. The images above show the point in which the melt pool reaches the edge with very little hangup left. Not only is this normal, it has been designed into the overall design of the candle. Natural candle enthusiasts look for this signature as an indication of a natural wax. Because beeswax takes some time to warm, you will not perceive the fragrance immediately with some candles. Our senses welcome gentle invitations. Abrupt alterations are jarring. Rather, appreciate the luxury of slow living – scents that unfold like the complexity in perfumery or the depth of a fine wine.

After these initial burns the wax warms quicker with the addition of a vessel retaining heat and a melt pool reaches with less and less hang up until the remaining 2/3 of the candle. Metal containers conduct heat more efficiently and may reach the edge sooner. We recommend burning for 3-4 hours and always trimming the wick before lighting. This maintains clean wax and provides a healthy, fully combustible flame — a pure mix of fuel source (wax) with oxygen. Sooting is the result of an unhealthy, incomplete combustion.

In cold weather, a crack may develop across the top which indicates rapid cooling and hallmark of high quality beeswax. This is at temporary cosmetic effect and will even out in subsequent burns. This happens mostly with wood wicks.

Beeswax candles reward us with a warmer glow than any other wax, a beautiful, natural scent and a longer, healthier burn.

Rules are meant to be broken anyway.
